Why N95 cup masks are an ideal choice for pollution and Covid 19 alike?

Masks were supposed to offer protection against pollution and people just did not heed to that advice. They were okay when pollution was stifling them slowly but surely. However, it took a menace in the form of Covid 19 to get people to wear the masks since it has posed an immediate danger to the lives of the people. For this reason, the hitherto unknown masks, such as 3 ply, 4 ply, N95, N99 and cotton masks have become common names. Among these, it is the N95 and the N99 which are said to offer best protection against the virus.

N95 Cup Masks for Covid 19 protection

N95 is the one which filters out 95% of air whereas N99 filters out 99% of the air. The airflow is somewhat higher in N95 cup masks than in N99 masks. The breathability resistance of these N95 respirator masks is half that of N99 masks. It means that you may use this N95 respirator mask for longer periods without experiencing breathing difficulties. If you live in a polluted area, this is the best option because it lets you stay healthy and breathe pure, fresh air.

Features of a N95 Mask

Within N95 masks, there are certain features which give options to users.
There are N95 masks which come with a foam layer in between the non-woven material layers to provide good fitting and comfort to the face. These are called the N95 cup masks.
There is also a variation by way of existence or absence of a respirator valve.
Further, some might come with an earloop while some others might has elasticated head loop. The headloop, further, may come with or without an adjuster.
Nose pins are now a common feature which provide the right fitting on nose. These can be of plastic or aluminium metal.

Who should not wear an N99 mask?

N99 is not meant for all. This is different from the N95 masks which have more acceptability. Because the filtration quality is kept high, the breathability resistance of N99 type of mask is compromised. It is, however, unsuitable for many people:
  1. Pregnant ladies: Long-term usage of these masks will cause an increase in heart rate, which will harm the foetus. Wearing an N95 mask for an hour or so does not harm embryonic development.
  2. Senior citizens: Although the immunity level is low, wearing an N99 mask is pointless if you live a sedentary lifestyle. Furthermore, an n99 mask could cause asphyxiation in adults over the age of 60.
  3. Respiratory/Cardiac condition: If any of you suffer from a heart or lung condition, this N99 mask is not for you. As a result of its use, your health will deteriorate all the more. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) does not recommend it at all.
A word of caution

Many health providers across the globe prefer N95 masks for young, active, dynamic and people suffering from lung ailments. Furthermore, if you suffer from any of the symptoms listed below, it is preferable to use N95 over N99. Here are the conditions:
  1. Breathing problems
  2. Emphysema
  3. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  4. Asthma
  5. Cardio-pulmonary problems
